Archives for November 2012
This is the time of year I put away my Christmas chocolate inventory prognostication hat, howl at the moon, and toss a two headed coin to see just how much seasonal goodness I’m going to produce and bring into the stores.
My track record the past six years is not so much enviable as it is near-perfect mediocrity. I start fretting about it in the middle of summer, usually while vacationing at the lake, when Trixie thinks I’m napping but really I’m just freaking out with my eyes closed.
I carry the consternation through the Labor Day weekend into Fall, when I have to start thinking about packaging. I dissect the business sections of the many newspapers I read daily, looking for clues as to what the economy will be like four months out. On more than one occasion I’ve seen the same page sport two differing headlines, one extolling the virtues of saving (read: not spending, which I equate with never leaving the house) and the other, that consumers are the only saving grace for the western world, so spend like you’ve got Mark Carney money.
By October I’m looking to start smoking so I can sneak out for one and calm my nerves. Halloween means my par levels are set in stone. That leaves only November to second guess myself. Am I wired into the universe in that oddly sufficient way to have picked right? Is this the year I break a physics law and throw the planets out of alignment? Will I break out in hives?
This year I’ve decided I’m going to flat-out ask for people’s sympathy and support. Pretend I look so anguished because my appendix burst. Comfort me with a 26 ounce bottle of Glenfiddich (which you can leave in a brown paper bag with any of my staff provided you tell them it’s just a urine sample). Better yet, when I suspect it least, fill my inhaler with eau de horse tranquilizer.
If you don’t see a marked improvement in my disposition, come and buy chocolate, because I’m partying like it’s, well, Christmas 2012.
